The Facts About Aging
Did you know you start to age in your 20’s?? It’s unfortunately true. After the age of 20, collagen begins to decrease at about 1% per year. These changes start to appear in lines, wrinkles, and deepening of certain folds. In our 40’s we begin to lose volume in the face with certain fat pads, which then further deepens our folds and we may begin to see laxity or jowls develope. In our 50’s the fun continues with the addition of bone loss, which enhances the deepening of fold and laxity of our jowls that started in our 40s. As we age the integrity of our skin changes and we are far more prone to skin damage, static lines and wrinkles. Oh, we’re also becoming more prone to environmental damage as well!
I know what you’re wondering….. What can we do to prevent or fix this??!!
Let me first state that it’s never too late to start no matter your age! I have women come to me in their early 20’s ready to begin prevention and women in their 70’s for correction. Next I suggest staying out of direct sun exposure, eating a healthy balanced diet with rich fruits and vegetables, and drinking PLENTY of water (it’s recommended that you consume half your body weight in ounces every day).
In addition, I always recommend a great skin care regime. Your skin care should focus on the following: Vitamin A or retinols, glycolics, antioxidants, peptides, and growth factors (refer to our blog titled Skin Care Basics for more of a breakdown). I believe that taking care of your skin is the first step in slowing down the process of aging. It’s something you can do every day and night in the comfort of your own home! We have several great skin care lines and customize skin care regimens for our patients that meet their needs, as well as their schedule and budget.
The main focus in the “medical” spa industry is prevention of collagen loss as well as collagen stimulation. There are a number of great procedures that can help slow down the process of aging such as lasers, micro-needling, Platelet-Rich-Plasma, facials, radio-frequency, and the list goes on! So how do you know what’s best for you? Come in and let’s talk about a customized plan to keep you looking and feeling younger.
